Abstract
We would explore the critical role of media as a vehicle for the revitalization of the Tarifit language, a key variant of the Amazigh languages spoken in Morocco’s Rif region. In light of the increasing dominance of Arabic and French in public life, this panel would examine the potential of media platforms—both traditional and digital—as transformative tools for preserving and promoting Tarifit in a rapidly changing linguistic landscape.
We will analyze the current state of Tarifit within national media, discussing both the achievements and limitations of existing initiatives such as radio broadcasts, television programs, and community-driven digital media. By highlighting successful case studies of media-led revitalization in other minority language communities, this panel seeks to present actionable strategies for enhancing the presence of Tarifit in media, fostering positive linguistic attitudes, and ensuring intergenerational transmission.
The discussion will further delve into the challenges posed by globalization and language shift, while proposing innovative ways in which media can not only sustain but empower a broader cultural and linguistic renaissance for Tarifit speakers. Through a nuanced understanding of media’s capacity to shape identity and influence linguistic behavior, this panel advocates for a renewed commitment to integrating Tarifit into Morocco’s evolving media landscape, thus securing its future as a living language.
